Next week, December 5th - 11th, is National Hour of Code week. This is a global event that schools from around the world take part in to learn about computer science. Willard East will be participating by doing activities on Code.org. As technology becomes more and more important in every facit of life so does knowing how to create technology.
This will be my first time to participate in Hour of Code. I am looking forward to sharing that experience with my Willard East students. You can join us by going to hourofcode.com/us/learn.
3rd grade has been working to create thankful turkeys using google drawings. Here are a few of their creations. I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving!
October 16-22 is Digital Citizenship Week. In an ever increasing world of technology, being a good digital citizen becomes more and more important. Learning to use technology in a safe, responsible, and appropriate way is a skill students will use the rest of their lives. Willard East uses Common Sense Media.org to teach about digital citizenship. Mrs. Hillenburg in the library and I partner together to teach students topics such as digital footprints, cyber bullying, cell phone manners, and internet safety.
Many resources are available at Common Sense Media to help you navigate technology with your child. Under the "Family Guides tab" there are reviews of movies, tv shows, and video games. The "Parent Concerns tab" covers many more important issues parents may have questions about. Common Sense Media is a great website for parents and teachers.. Be sure to check it out. Below is a link to their site. The fourth grade classes have been learning how to make a quality blog comment. Students wrote their own scripts to teach you what they have learned. Be sure to click on the button below to watch Mrs. Well's students in action.
These sweet first graders finished their Earth Day poems in Google slides by adding pictures. I am proud of how hard they have worked this week.
It was a little crazy in the computer room during kindergarten specials this week. Students had fun learning about the keyboard by playing keyboard BINGO.
MAP testing is over! 4th grade is back to working on Kidblog, and they published their first post. Students wrote a poem to introduce themselves. Next week we will be learning how to make quality comments. Be watching for their next post.
The first Earth Day was held on April 22, 1970 in the United States. It is now recognized by 192 countries. In honor of this important cause kindergarten through 3rd grade classes have been working on various green themed technology projects. Check out some of the kindergarten creations. This week in the computer lab....
Kindergarten reviewed their shapes using the online games Shapesville and Shape Splat. They also practiced making words using the same ending letters with Starfall. First grade used Keyboard Zoo 2 to practice typing sentences with capital letters and end punctuation. Second grade worked with Google Sheets to create a chart showing whether students in their class thought they were more like the tortoise or the hare. They learned to insert a row, center their information within a cell, change the color of certain cells, and increase the font size for a row and column. Third graders had fun creating an April Fool's Day story with their classmates. They rotated around the room adding one sentence to the story being written on that computer. Students learned that punctuation and capital letters are important to help us understand what has been written. Fourth grade continued to practice their typing on typing club. They also completed a scavenger hunt about Jefferson City to prepare for their upcoming field trip. |
